Officials: One escaped prisoner leader of Mexican Mafia Gang (Pearsall, TX): Five federal prisoners, including an alleged leader of the Mexican Mafia gang, escaped Friday from a privately run lockup in Pearsall. The escape happened from a Correctional Services Corp. unit.

Gangs blamed in string of shootings (Fort Worth, TX): Five gang-related shootings in six days last week, including an attack on a police officer, left one person dead and four wounded, leading police to increase patrols in east and north Fort Worth. Three shootings might be linked to a north-side gang's attempt to re-establish itself after having to lie low since February, when its leader was accused of killing one man and wounding five others, Sgt. Bill Beall, a gang unit supervisor, said.

Riot erupts at detention center (Olmito, TX): A gang-related riot inside the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center near Olmito Friday afternoon left one inmate with a stab wound to the neck and 11 others injured. Although jail officials said that the gang turf-war they experienced Friday is part of a trend of state jail violence drifting south, experts say that the possibility is unlikely and that the violence is probably a local problem.

Web of violence: Garland police find that rival youths used chat rooms to set up the fight (Garland, TX): It was a clash born in cyberspace. But on March 3, the profanity-laden put-downs that had been exchanged over the Internet escalated into a street fight in Garland with low-tech weapons such as fists, bats and clubs. Several young people were injured, including one whose arm was broken.

Gang suspect nabbed (El Paso, TX): A 25-year-old suspected Bernalillo gang member was arrested in El Paso as he was trying to enter Mexico, an official said. The man is wanted in connection with several drive-by shootings that occurred in February and March in Bernalillo and a warrant out of Albuquerque.

Police think deadly shoot-out gang-related (San Antonio, TX): A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot, and a 17-year-old boy was wounded in what police say was likely a gang-related shoot-out. The shooting occurred in the parking lot of Mittman Fine Foods when the 15-year-old and a friend were confronted by a group of seven or eight young men. The groups exchanged words, and guns were drawn. The 15-year-old victim had a small-caliber weapon, police said. After several shots were fired, someone pulled out a shotgun and ended the gunfight. Police said the boy likely injured the 17-year-old with a gunshot wound. Police have not made any arrests.
