Gang member sentenced to 50 years in prison for 2015 murder of family member (San Antonio, TX): A judge sentenced a man to 50 years in prison on Friday for the murder of his cousin in 2015. In May 2016, 39-year-old Michael Whitley was sitting in the front of a home at the 300 block of Ferris Avenue, scratching off a lottery ticket when he was suddenly shot in the chest and head. When authorities arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Indictment: Houston-based gang members ran five-state scam targeting rental cars (Houston, TX): The $40,000 car was stolen Jan. 2 from Alamo Rental Car in Texas and sold over the internet to an unsuspecting buyer — one of 33 vehicles worth more than $1 million taken by what federal authorities say was a sophisticated theft ring run across five states by a Houston-area street gang. The men — all from Houston or Missouri City and believed to be members of a Bloods gang offshoot — sold the cars for cash on CraigsList or OfferUp, then bragged about their exploits on Instagram and Twitter, according to federal prosecutors.
