TennesseeMulti-year investigation by HSI results in federal indictments for 27 individuals (Nashville, TN): An investigation conducted by Homeland Security Investigations resulted in a federal indictment for 27 individuals accused of committing crimes relating to conspiracy to distribute illicit drugs. The acting U.S. attorney for the middle district of Tennessee made the announcement March 31 in Nashville.

MassachusettsFormer Member of North Shore Latin Kings Chapter Sentenced for Drug Distribution Charges (Boston, MA): A former member of the North Shore Chapter of the Massachusetts Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation (“Latin Kings”) was sentenced today on drug distribution charges. Jesus Diaz, a/k/a “King Kiko,” 37, was sentenced by U.S. Senior District Court Judge Rya W. Zobel to 72 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

GeorgiaDCS, FBI task force target gang activity (McDuffie County, GA): Last week the Georgia Department of Community Supervision led a joint operation targeting gang activity in Thomson and made seven arrests. According to a spokesperson for DCS, officials “conducted warrant service, intensive searches, and field interviews with verified gang members - primarily those associated with the known Street Gangs in the Thomson.”

Mississippi3 charged, 1 wanted in Hattiesburg shooting (Hattiesburg, MS): Hattiesburg police arrested three people charged in connection to a Monday afternoon shooting and have issued an arrest warrant for a fourth. The shooting happened around 3 p.m. in the parking lot of a service station on Mayfair Road, according to police. Two vehicles were struck by gunfire in the shooting, but no injuries were reported.

CaliforniaMan sentenced for trying to murder rival gang member in Salinas (Salinas, CA): The Monterey County District Attorney's office said a gang member, Jose Daniel Perez, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for trying to murder a rival gang member.

Mora grew up surrounded by gangs, drugs, and an unstable home. “I didn't have nobody there so I ended up turning to gangs. Everything I was looking for at home, I found it in the streets,” she said. “I started using drugs when I was 13. I had a traumatic experience when I was growing up at the age of 8. And it just skyrocketed from there.”

CaliforniaFresno police chief doubles down in fight against gang-related killings and violent crimes (Fresno, CA): Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama wants gang-related killings and violent crime in the city to stop. Balderrama’s is adding more resources to the Multi-Gang Enforcement Consortium (MAGEC) in response to the 22 homicides — 14 of which were gang related — and 152 shootings in 2021.

IllinoisMan, 32, Killed In Sunday Logan Square Shooting (Chicago, IL): A 32-year-old man was shot to death in Logan Square over the weekend, according to police and the local alderman. Sinforiano Trujillo was shot around 4:35 p.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of West Cortland Street, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. Trujillo was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

MassachusettsMother of Shawmut St. shooting victim speaks out on recent gang violence (Springfield, MA): A local mother is speaking out after her son was fatally shot on Saturday night in Springfield. Now city officials are working to help stop the violence. Police said there were three connected shootings from Friday night to Sunday night. Western Mass News spoke exclusively to a mother from Springfield whose son was killed in one of those shootings. She said people need to get to the root causes of this violence.
