Athens Homicide (Los Angeles, CA): On March 12, a gunman in a gray car shot and killed a 19-year-old man and wounded two others in an unincorporated area of LA County, in what Sheriif's Department officials are terming a gang-related drive-by shooting.

Shooting victim, brother involved in crash (Ivanhoe, CA): A 17-year-old boy crashed his car as he was driving his younger brother to a local hospital. The younger brother had been shot three times in an apparent gang-related shooting. The driver had hit speeds of up to 100 mph before he crashed. The two brothers were walking out of a local supermarket when they were approached by two boys. An argument preceded the actual shooting. The two suspects fled the scene on bicycles.

New charges in Aurora gang probe (Aurora, IL): According to Aurora police, a third man has been charged with murder in Operation Double Down, an ongoing federal, state and local investigation targeting an Aurora street gang. The man was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the October 16, 2002 shooting of a 24-year-old man. Operation Double Down has resulted in many arrests for state and federal gang-related drug and weapons charges.

Suspect arrested in shooting (Oklahoma City, OK): An 18-year-old man was arrested March 11 on complaints of murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and using a motor vehicle to discharge a weapon. He is the suspect of a drive-by shooting that killed a 19-year-old man while wounding another 17-year-old man. An investigation is underway to see if there are any links between the shootings and an ongoing dispute between rival gangs. The shootings occurred in the 1500 block of SW 23, an area claimed by both the Grande Barrio Comitatus, commonly known as GBC, and the South Side Locos. Police say that there are no records of the suspect being a gang member, but they are not ruling out the possibility.

Seven hurt in Fresno shooting - crash (Fresno, CA): A chaotic scene resulted March 11, when two rival groups sped through the streets of Fresno, California, while exchanging gunfire. Three people were shot, including two bystanders, while four others were injured in the car crash which ended the chase. Two shooting victims, a 20-year-old man and a 39-year-old man, were in critical, but stable condition. A 15-year-old boy who was shot in the stomach, is a possible suspect. A mother, her four-year-old boy, and two teenage siblings, were injured and hospitalized after their car was struck by one of the vehicles involved in the shooting. A white four-door car believed to be carrying four men, fled the scene immediately and police have no leads as to who the suspects are or the whereabouts of the car. Authorities do not know what prompted the shooting and have not stated whether this was gang-related or not.

Four wounded in two separate shootings on South Side (Chicago, IL): A total of four men were wounded in two shootings March 11th. The first involved an unknown offender who walked up to a 19-year-old man, started a fight, and then shot the man in the neck and abdomen. The victim was in stable condition, police said. The second incident was a drive-by shooting that resulted in three males being shot. The suspect drove off without being identified. Two men were in critical condition while the third was in serious condition. Police have not announced whether any of these incidents were gang-related.

Street shooting (Los Angeles, CA): A young man was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in the southwest area of Los Angeles on the evening of March 11th. The victim was shot after he had left a parking lot where minutes earlier he had been arguing with an unidentified group of males. The group fled the scene by vehicle. It has not been determined whether this shooting was gang-related.

Drugs, guns seized in Lancaster Raids (Lancaster, CA): Detectives in Lancaster, California, arrested six men, a woman, and teenager in an investigation that began with three San Fernando Valley shootings three months ago, involving two rival gangs. Police seized crack cocaine, two pounds of marijuana, weapons, and $13,000 in cash in gang members' homes. Police refused to comment on whether any of the eight arrested were involved in the shootings.

Victim of gunshot walks into hospital (San Bernardino, CA): A man was shot on the evening of March 10, while standing near a phone booth, when a individual drove by asked him where he was from. Before he could answer, the unknown suspect opened fire. This may have been a gang-related attack. The victim's wound was not life-threatening.

Times Square Dragnet - Hunt widens as cops eye two shooters in melee (New York, NY): Police are continuing their investigation in what is being labeled as the "Times Square" shooting. On the evening of March 9th, ten people were injured in a Times Square night club. Eight people were shot and two were stabbed. Four men are being questioned in this investigation at this point. Police believe that this was not a gang-related incident, while one witness states that the violence was indeed gang-related.

Santa Paula Police Chief vows crackdown as homicides soar (Santa Paula, CA): Officials in Santa Paula, California, plan new strategies to stop gang violence. Homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, auto theft, and arson all increased in 2002 and resulted in the more proactive approach. Part of the plan calls for a redeployment of 29 officers in different areas of town to monitor any activity that may lead to gang violence. Two of the 29 officers will be in street clothes to better assess the gang problem.

Gang crimes up in the Valley (San Fernando Valley, CA): Officials reported that homicide attempts by gang members in the San Fernando Valley increased 209 percent for January 2003; 34, compared to 11 in January 2002. Although attempts have increased, Los Angeles Police Department officials say that gang killings for the beginning of 2003 have actually dropped 44 percent in the Valley compared to the same time last year.

Family: Slain teen kept to himself (Greensboro, NC): A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot on the evening of March 8th. He was approaching an intersection with a group of other people when shots were fired from a four-door car. Police are still investigating the motive of this killing and have not made arrests. The boy's grandmother stated that he was not a gang member.

Churches aim to break gangs' hold (Bloomington, IN): Local church leaders in Bloomington, Indiana, are setting aside religious differences to fight a common enemy: gangs. After a series of gang-related shootings occurred in the fall of 2002, local police asked church leaders for help, leading to the formation of "Operation Impact." The members of Operation Impact now plan to educate themselves through gang trainings and youth activities to get a better feel of what areas they need to target. They want to gain the trust of kids and teens, and provide activities to keep them off the streets.

Three men shot dead within blocks of one another (Los Angeles, CA) : Investigation is underway for three gang-related homicides that occurred in the Wilshire Center area from the evening of March 7th into the early morning hours of March 8th. The killings all appeared to be gang-related, but have no connection to one another, said Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). According to LAPD, the first involved a man being shot in the back of the head. In a second incident, a man was shot in the chest by a suspect on a bicycle. The shooting was prefaced by an argument between the two individuals. In the third shooting, the victim was approached by a gunman and was shot in the chest. Police believe that there were two other men accompanying the gunman.

Anti-gang unit resumes active role (Bloomington, IL): In Bloomington, IL, the anti-gang unit is making a stand in what they call, "re-establishing the front line in a war against gangs." Some officers from the city of Normal reunited with their Bloomington counterparts following several years of independent agency operations. Lack of manpower disassembled what once was a five agency task force, but with a rejuvenated proactive approach on the streets, the city has seen results in the abating of gang crimes. Key arrests of gang members and drug dealers, confiscating of hand guns, and increased street pressure are just some of the successes. Their main goal is to minimize street-level crimes and gang violence. They hope that the message they have been conveying this past winter will be just as pronounced in the warmer months to come as, typically, people will be out and about more.

Shooting of teens might be gang-related (Portland, OR): Three boys, ages 15, 16, and 17, were on the receiving end of what was believed to be a gang-related shooting. Details were sparse, no weapons were recovered, and it is not known if this was a drive-by shooting. Police said that if this incident proves to be gang-related, it will be a continuation of an ongoing problem of gang violence in the Portland area, noting at least three nonfatal shootings in the past week. Police have no leads or suspects, and it is not certain that or any proof that the victims were the intended targets.

Fillmore crime rose in 2002 amid gang battles (Ventura County, CA): The city of Fillmore has seen its crime rate increase 15% in the past year, with a jump in felony violence. Law enforcement attributes much of the increase to gang activity. Tactics being used by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department to combat the increase include: increased drug arrests, more patrolling in bars, and more searches of the homes of suspects on probation or parole. A special effort was also made to address the issue of youth gangs.

Police seek help in shooting case (Salinas, CA): In Salinas, California, a 17-year-old boy was shot multiple times by someone police believe is a gang member. The teenager was driving in his car when the alleged gang member pulled up next to him and fired several shots. The victim, who was not believed to be a gang member, survived his injuries.
