Somerville split on plan to ban gang gatherings (Somerville, MA): Debate surrounds a city of Somerville, Massachusetts, proposed loitering ban that would bar known gang members from congregating in certain parts of the city. Some residents feel that violence has risen to a point where the ban is necessary to ensure safety for them and their kids. Other residents believe that the proposal discriminates against the Latino population.

Shooters kill two men in Van Nuys, North Hollywood (San Fernando Valley, CA): Los Angeles Police Departement are investigating two separate shootings that left two men dead. In the first incident, a 28-year-old man was shot to death while walking with a friend on a street in North Hollywood. Although the shooting occurred in a gang area, police cannot say that it is a gang crime. In the second incident which occurred only 90 minutes later in Van Nuys, a 36-year-old man was found dead in a gutter after being shot multiple times, police said. Police have not yet determined whether the second shooting was gang-related.

Off the bus, thugs (Durham, NC): A possible gang-related shooting occurred on a Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) bus on April 5th, police reported. The DATA bus driver told officials that when the bus stopped, someone reached in through a window and fired seven rounds. This shooting was the second involving city buses in a little over a week. No one was reported injured and police have not received any more information on the incident.

Essex DA has eyes on gangs (Lynn, MA): In Lynn, Massachussetts, the District Attorney has teamed up with the Lynn Police Department's anti-gang unit to combat gang recruitment, gang violence, and drug dealing. In addition to the police department, other organizations such as Lynn area schools and the Greater Lynn YMCA, have pitched in to help the unified goal of keeping youths out of gangs.

Anti-gang officers arrest suspect only minutes after fatal shooting (Los Angeles, CA): In South Los Angeles, a 35-year-old male was arrested by anti-gang officers minutes after he allegedly fatally shot a 21-year-old male. Police were in the vicinity when they heard two shots. They chased the man until he eventually surrendered in the yard of a nearby home.

Shots fired into mobile home killing woman (Carlsbad, NM): Police said a 24-year-old Carlsbad woman was killed, and two men, ages 20 and 24, were wounded when shots were fired into a mobile home. Police said the shooting occurred after a group of people was asked to leave the mobile home. They believe the shooting was gang-related.

Man shot, hit by car (Ogden, UT): Ogden police are investigating a gang-related shooting that occurred after a man argued with two rival gang members. One of the the gang members pulled out a handgun and started firing, police said. The wounded victim was struck by a car while trying to get away. Two suspects are being sought.

Man, woman badly hurt in shooting (Portland, OR): A drive-by shooting in northeast Portland left a 23-year-old man in critical condition and a 20-year-old woman in serious conditon. The victims were in their car when they were shot by someone in a passing vehicle, officials said. This was the second shooting in three days. In the first, a 30-year-old male was shot to death by a passenger in a moving car, police said. The motives for the shootings have not been determined.

Central High students see two men shot (Phoenix, AZ): An alleged gang-related shooting left two men, ages 19 and 24, wounded and in extremely critical condition, police said. Two cars were chasing each other for several blocks before stopping; the two victims jumped out of their car and were shot several times, according to witnesses and police. The shooter, along with two other men, fled in a car, which police later found abandoned. A handgun was found in the car, but there were no signs of the suspects.

Police and volunteers target graffiti in San Luis (San Luis, AZ) : San Luis police are teaming up with residents, high school students, and probationers working off community service to wipe out gang-related graffiti that has been showing up around the city. Two local gangs are responsible for most of the graffiti, police said.

Three men injured in drive-by shooting (Houston, TX): Three men, ages 29, 20, and 23, were injured in a drive-by shooting in southeast Houston on April 6th, according to police. The suspect pulled up to the three men on a local freeway and shot at them. Two were shot and one was injured from flying glass.

Teenager shot in drive-by attack (Fort Pierce, FL): A 14-year-old girl was shot during a drive-by shooting while standing in front of her home with a group of people. A car, with several males inside, drove past the home and fired several gunshots at the group, police said. The shooters are being sought by poilce.

Alleged gang leader, girlfriend slain in bed (Steger, IL): A gang leader and his girlfriend were found shot to death in the bedroom of their apartment. Authorities reported that both were 25 years old. There were no signs of forced entry or robbery.

Man shot dead at bowling alley (Salinas, CA): A 36-year-old Salinas man was fatally shot after a fight broke out at a local bowling alley, according to police. Investigation is underway, and it has yet to be determined whether this shooting was gang-related.

Teaming up to tackle L.A. Gangs (Los Angeles, CA): The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has established Gang Impact Teams (GIT) in each of its 18 divisions to combat the city's most notorious gangs. Begun in March 2003, the GIT integrates uniformed gang officers, gang detectives, and narcotics investigators under one command to eliminate past difficulties of gathering intelligence and case information from separate units. A lieutenant will command each team.

Portland police look for leads in deadly drive-by (Portland, OR): A 30-year-old man was killed in what Portand police believe was a drive-by shooting. Police have a few leads, but have no further information as to what the motive was and have declined to release any information about the suspects.

Drive-by shots fired at house (Marlboro, NJ): Police arrested four men in connection with a drive-by shooting that occurred in western Marlboro. The men, ranging in age from 19 to 22, opened fire on a group of people in an open garage, but no one was injured, police said. Each was charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and weapons violations. Police have not been able to determine a motive for the shooting yet.

House passes two death penalty reform bills (Illinois): The Illinois House passed two pieces of legislation to reform the death penalty. House Bill 1281 would remove several aggravating factors for which the death penalty may be imposed for first-degree murder. One of those is murder as a result of a drive-by shooting. Persons convicted of this type of crime could still receive the death penalty under other aggravating factors.

Man Shot by unknown assailant dies (Ventura County, CA): A 22-year-old Santa Paula man died from a gunshot while standing outside a friend's apartment. The victim was shot right after he was asked where he was from. Police have not determined if the shooting was gang-related or not.
