Shotgun victim, 18, dies of his wounds (Lake View Terrace, CA): A drive-by shooting in Lake View Terrace left an 18-year-old dead and a 16-year-old in critical condition, police said. The pedestrians were shot when a group of Latinos pulled up alongside them in a car, and one of the occupants pulled out a shotgun and opened fire. Police believe the incident was gang-related.

Teen wounded in drive-by attack (Carpentersville, IL): A drive-by shooting in Carpentersville wounded a 16-year-old boy as he was walking down the street, police reported. A male known to the victim leaned out of a passing car and fired at least one shot at the teen. Police say that the shooting may have been gang-related. No suspects were in custody.

Market shooting (Los Angeles, CA): Police are investigating a possible gang-related shooting outside the Family Farms Market that fatally wounded a man in his 20s. According to reports, a gunman shot the man at the front door, and then ran through the parking lot. Police are looking for three suspects.

Gang arrests (Buena Park, CA): Buena Park police arrested five people in connection with two gang-related shootings in April. In the first shooting, a gunman on a bicycle sprayed bullets into a home, but no one was wounded. In the second shooting, another gunman opened fire in retaliation to the first shooting. A five-year-old boy was inadvertently wounded, police said.

Gangs targeted (Costa Mesa, CA): In Costa Mesa, police searched ten homes in response to two gang-related shootings, a stabbing, and three graffiti incidents. Three guns were confiscated, and three juveniles and an 18-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of violating probation or not cooperating with officers.

Bassett shooting (Bassett, CA): A 19-year-old man was fatally shot in a possible gang-related shooting in Bassett, according to officials. A woman was also wounded in the shooting, but sheriff's deputies declined to reveal information about her.

Murder decline (Los Angeles, CA): Increased efforts to reduce gang-related crimes have helped the Los Angeles overall homicide rate to fall 21 percent from the same period in 2002. Gang-related crimes account for about half of all crimes in the city. In addition, the San Fernando Valley has seen homicides decline by 61 percent for the first half of the year.

Police seek two men in stabbing of 17-year-old boy (Corpus Christi, TX): Two men are being sought by police in connection with the gang-related stabbing of a 17-year-old teen at an apartment complex. According to witnesses, two men, 18 to 20 years old, were seen circling the property in an SUV.

Police arrest two juveniles in taxi driver's death (Marietta, GA): Two gang members, ages 14 and 16, were arrested for fatally shooting a 53-year-old taxicab driver, police said. The driver gave a ride to the two teenagers, and was later found slumped over the steering wheel after being shot. Police believe that robbery was the motive for the killing.

Cops hunt for armed robbery suspects (Central New Jersey): Two men, ages 18 and 24, were questioned in connection with five armed robberies that left two injured in the Central Jersey area. The robberies took place at a gas station and four fast-food restaurants in Bound Brook, North Plainfield, and Piscataway. The New Jersey State Police Street Gang Unit are investigating whether the robberies are gang-related, perhaps an initiation ritual for members, according to police.

Two men shot in drive-by shooting (Riviera Beach, FL): In Riviera Beach, two men in their 20s and 30s were wounded during a drive-by shooting, police said. Both men were in serious condition. Police have a description of the suspects' vehicle, and the investigation is continuing.

Freeport teen is injured in gang-related attack (Freeport, NY): A 17-year-old boy was critically injured during a possible gang-related incident, according to police reports. Four men, alleged MS-13 members, got out of a car and approached three young men. The alleged members informed the other group of their gang affiliation and asked them to identify themselves. The young men being taunted went to a nearby house and armed themselves with a sickle and sledgehammer. When the 17-year-old came back out, the suspects' car accelerated and slammed into the teen. The suspects fled the scene. Police have not made any arrests.

Two men charged in death of Anchorage teen (Anchorage, AK) : Two men, ages 26 and 19, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder in a May 18 shooting that left a 15-year-old boy dead. Police said the boy was caught in the crossfire of what was believed to be a gang-related shooting.

Bus stop (Venice, CA): An alleged gang-related shooting at a Venice bus stop killed a 23-year-old man and critcally wounded a 52-year-old woman, according to police. The suspect, believed to be a Santa Monica gang member, fired multiple shots at the bus stop in what police say was a retaliation shooting.

Law enforcement agencies join forces to find gang members (Fresno, CA): A two-week special operation involving more than 200 officers from the Fresno Police Department, the Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium, the Fresno County Sheriff's Department, the California Highway Patrol, and other agencies will take part in the Gang Suppression Task Force 2003. The goal of this operation is to sweep streets and areas where gang members are prominent. So far this year, 15 shootings and one stabbing were gang-related. One resulted in a homicide. About 55 gangs with 6,000 members exist in Fresno.

Man sitting in car, wounded in drive-by (Escondido, CA): Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that wounded an 18-year-old man in Escondido. The victim was sitting in his parked car when a small car drove past him, turned around, and passed him again, police said. A passenger then fired and hit the victim twice. The victim did not suffer any life-threatening wounds, and police have made no arrests.

Elgin shooting (Elgin, IL): Police are investigating a possible gang-related shooting that damaged a home in Elgin. Several bullets were fired at the home, but no one was injured. Police have not reported any suspects.

Goodyear Avenue man wounded in drive-by shooting (Buffalo, NY): An 18-year-old man was wounded during a drive-by shooting, police said. The man, who was treated and released for his wounds, was shot when a man in a vehicle pulled up, stood up in his sunroof, and fired about five shots. No other information was available.

Street stakeout nets gang, fugitive arrests (Midtown, TN): Shelby County sheriff's deputies and Memphis police arrested 30 people and issued 104 traffic violations in the Evergreen area in Midtown, according to officials. This was an effort to target fugitives and others involved in gang-related crimes.

Barber shop dispute ends with one dead (Denver, CO): A 22-year-old man was shot and killed in what police are saying was a gang-related shooting. The victim and the shooter were in a barbershop when they began to argue. As the argument continued outside, the suspect got in his vehicle and opened fire as the victim walked down the sidewalk. Police had difficulty when questioning the witnesses because of fear of retaliation.
