Charged in deadly gang rite (Harlem, NY): Police charged a 19-year-old man with manslaughter in the death of a 16-year-old during an alleged gang initiation rite in Harlem. The suspect told police he belongs to a small gang called the Bone Thugs, a group of Harlem-based "rapper wanna-bes," according to police. A 14-year-old boy, who is a friend of the victim, said the suspect and victim were not supposed to hit one another in the face. "They were throwing body punches, they were supposed to be fighting for 30 seconds, but it only lasted 10 seconds," the boy said. The suspect, charged with second-degree manslaughter, could face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

Woman wounded in knee in suspected gang shooting (Anaheim, CA): Police are investigating a shooting that wounded an Anaheim woman. The woman was driving her car when a man and another woman in a van allegedly shot her after the female in the van yelled a gang slogan. Although the woman injured was not a gang member, police said that the shooting was still considered gang-related.

Gang ties probed in hotel fight (Aurora, IL): A party with about 200 people turned into a brawl at the North Aurora Inn parking lot, police reported. Witnesses told police that the fight was gang-related. Three officers suffered minor wounds, but no other major injuries were reported. According to reports, a 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with reckless driving and resisting an officer after attempting to flee the area in his vehicle.

Eight held in cross-fire slaying of teacher (Long Beach, CA): Eight alleged gang members were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old woman as she and her 12-year-old son, who was shot in the shoulder, were passing by in their car, police said. Police allege it was a gang-related shooting, but the victim was not the intended target. A 22-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder. The other seven people were arrested on unrelated charges but are believed to be involved in the shooting, said a Long Beach police officer.

More officers for gang effort (Chicago, IL): Due to increased murders this year in Chicago, officials announced a plan to deploy 100 highly-trained police officers to the city's most gang-ridden neighborhoods in an effort to curb violent crime. In addition, the mayor plans to re-assign 450 gang crimes officers to the city's most troubled communities.

Man injured by stray gang shots (Van Nuys, CA): A 54-year-old man was wounded during an apparent gang-related shooting, police said. The victim was visiting with friends at an apartment building when shots were fired by a group of four or five men. No arrests have been made.

Los Angeles Police Department making more arrests (Los Angeles, CA): Gang-related arrests have increased 84 percent since the Los Angeles Police Department's Police Chief took over last October. Anti-gang officers have made 3,225 arrests this year, compared with 1,757 in 2002. One of the first actions taken by the new chief was coordinating anti-gang efforts for a massive reorganization. In addition, he changed the hours worked by narcotics and gang officers, as well as detectives, to better monitor serious crimes on nights and weekends. Crime rates have also dropped according to the chief. Homicides are down 21.6 percent, from 306 killings last year to 240 so far this year.

Shooting witnesses uncooperative (Bloomington, IL): Police continue to investigate the death of a 24-year-old man who was shot at Miller Park in an alleged gang-related shooting. The motive remains unclear, and witnesses who were near the park have been interviewed, but were uncooperative. Police believe a fight occurred before several shots were fired. No arrests have been made.

Man wounded in drive-by shooting (Manhattan, NY): A 23-year-old man was wounded during a drive-by shooting in Washington Heights, police said. The man was sitting on a bench with four others when someone in a passing car opened fire. The man was in stable condition, and police have not made any arrests.

Woman killed in drive-by shooting (Richmond, VA): A 23-year-old woman was shot to death, and her 16-year-old brother and a 21-year-old female friend were wounded in a drive-by shooting in South Richmond. Wounds suffered by the 16 and 21-year-olds were not considered life-threatening, police said. Police report that the victims were standing in front of a house when they were shot from the driver's side of a passing car. No arrests have been made, and police are seeking more information about the shooting.

Plea to find boy's killer (Elmhurst, NY): Police are investigating a possible gang-related shooting that occurred in front of an apartment building that left a 16-year-old boy dead. The boy was believed to have been involved in gang activity, police said. "He was clearly the target," said a police source. "This wasn't the case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Two injured in gang-related shooting (Raleigh, NC) : In Raleigh, a 33-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy suffered minor injuries during a gang-related shooting, police said. The incident began at Watson's Flea Market when a group of four teens asked a man and two teenagers which gang they belonged to. They told them of their affiliation with a rival gang, displayed hand signs, and got into a car and left the flea market, an officer said. The other men pursued them, and a passenger fired a shotgun into the fleeing vehicle. Police arrested and charged a 16-year-old with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Another 16-year-old was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting an assault with deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill. A 15-year-old was charged with being an accessory after the fact, and the fourth occupant, a 15-year-old, was not charged.

Orosi drive-by investigated (Orosi, CA): Police are seeking a group of men they say were involved in a drive-by shooting that wounded a man. According to the victim, the suspects were following him and his friends in a vehicle and eventually a confrontation took place at a convenience store. One of the suspects displayed a handgun and fired a single shot, deputies said.

Bullets claim life of man sitting in vehicle (New Orleans, LA): A 27-year-old man was fatally shot when unidentified suspects pulled up and opened fire while he was sitting in his vehicle, police said. Investigators are seeking the gunmen and a motive.

Man killed, woman hurt in nightclub shooting (Arlington, TX): Police say a possible gang-related shooting outside an Arlington nightclub left a 26-year-old man dead and a woman wounded. After a fight at the nightclub, gunfire ensued as the victim and others involved got into their vehicles. The woman who was wounded was at a nearby gas station when she was hit by a stray bullet. Police have no suspects.

Two shooting victims may face paralysis (Hayward, CA): Two men, ages 20 and 25, wounded in an apparent gang-related shooting in west Hayward, may be paralyzed due to their injuries, police said. Two other men, ages 20 and 24, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators assume the four men were gathered on the sidewalk when a car stopped next to them. Someone got out of the car and fired six to ten shots at the men, police said. Police have not yet determined the motive for the shooting, but said there are "gang overtones." "We have reason to believe that some, if not all, of the victims have gang affiliations." The area where the shooting occurred has a history of gang-related violence.

Two arrested in drive-by shooting (Los Angeles, CA): Two alleged male members of a Culver City gang, ages 16 and 18, were arrested after they allegedly used a U-Haul truck to commit a drive-by shooting in Venice, police reported. The teenagers led police on a chase that ended when the truck crashed into the Macy's department store in Fox Hills. The two suspects then ran from the truck, but were caught by police. The victim of the shooting, a man in his 20s, was listed in critical condition after the suspects pulled up to his residence and someone inside the cabin opened fire, police said.

Police investigating shooting of four men (Hayward, CA): Police are investigating a shooting in Northern Hayward that left four men wounded. According to reports, the shooting was the result of an early morning argument. Police do not know if the shooting is gang-related or if the men were shot by each other or by somebody else.

Boy shot during apparent drive-by shooting (Beloit, WI): A drive-by shooting left an 11-year-old boy wounded when a shot was fired into a home, police said. The boy, who was treated for minor injuries and released, was sleeping when the bullet came through the house and one of the shotgun pellets hit him. No arrests have been made.

Two charged with murder in drive-by shooting (Chicago, IL): Two men, ages 20 and 22, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the killing of a 19-year-old male as he was getting into a car in front of his home, according to prosecutors. The two men stole a van for the alleged shooting and later burned it. They were also charged with arson and burglary.
