Fresno gang sweep nets 35 (Fresno, CA): For 20 hours this weekend, Fresno police intensified their search for feuding gang members and parolees in the city's southwest neighborhoods, where tensions have been festering. Police Chief Jerry Dyer ordered the crackdown to stem escalating violence among rival gangs, whose long-standing feud culminated earlier this month in the slaying of Darryl Hilliard.

Gang ban is cutting crime, police say (Oxnard, CA): Nearly three weeks after a judge banned Oxnard's Colonia Chiques from congregating in public, authorities said Friday that they had served just 24 members of the county's largest street gang with the injunction, and have made no arrests under the June 1 court order.

Prisons to separate Hispanic gang (Nevada): The Nevada Department of Corrections is segregating members of a Hispanic prison gang to protect them from rivals, a prison official said. Some members of the Mi Raza Unida, which means My Race United, will be sent to another prison facility to protect them from two rival Latino gangs, said assistant director Glen Whorton.

More arrests possible in death of 4-year-old (Riverdale, GA): A gunbattle between members of the Southside Mafia and the Hit Squad that ended in the death of a 4-year-old boy illustrates Clayton County's growing gang problem. To help curb gang activity, Sheriff Stanley Tuggle announced Friday he was forming a gang task force, which should be up and running in two weeks.

Gangs may be involved in attacks (Memphis, TN): Sunday night, Christopher Melendez was stabbed twice while inside a nightclub in East Memphis. Wednesday afternoon, he was shot twice in the back in a drive-by shooting in the Berclair neighborhood. Melendez, 18, was driven by friends to Baptist East Hospital.

Another suspect nabbed in machete attack (Fairfax, VA): A third suspect was under arrest Friday in the machete attack that left a teen with mutilated hands, Fairfax County Police said. Jose Cruz, 19, of Annandale, was taken into custody late Thursday. Cruz was being held without bond on charges of aggravated malicious wounding and participating in gang activity.

Growing Hispanic gang presence prompts police, church response (Arlington County ,VA): Arlington County currently has more than 35,000 Hispanic residents. According to the Arlington County Police Gang Unit, less than 1 percent of those Hispanics are gang members. "The Hispanic gang members do not represent the Hispanic community at all," Sgt. John Rizik of the gang unit said. "The majority of the Hispanic population are honest, hardworking citizens."

Machete case defendant in court on earlier charge (Fairfax County, VA): An 18-year-old Fairfax County man charged in a gang-related machete attack last month faced another accusation of malicious wounding in court yesterday, stemming from the beating and slashing of a former gang member one month earlier.

Gang members face homicide charges (Oakland, CA): They call themselves the "Looney Tunes" gang, young East Oakland men who like cartoons, smoke marijuana and deal drugs, sometimes enforcing their reputation with gunfire, police say. Homicide investigators said Wednesday three suspected members of the gang have been charged with the September 2003 drive-by shooting death of a 24-year-old man they later said was not their actual target.

Durham man hurt in shooting in south Raleigh (Raleigh, NC): A 17-year-old Durham man was injured in a drive-by shooting in southwest Raleigh early Wednesday morning. Police arrested one suspect and are searching for at least one more.

Lawrence gang kingpin convicted on drug charges (Boston, MA): A leader of a Lawrence gang was convicted Thursday on federal cocaine distribution charges. Juan Conce, 27, known as "King Santos" in the Lawrence Chapter of the Almighty Latin King Nation, was among 20 reputed members of the gang who were indicted in February following a two-year multi-agency investigation into illegal drug trafficking.

US panel restores anti-gang funding (Washington, DC): A US House subcommittee yesterday restored more than $100 million in funds for gang prevention programs nationwide, which the White House had sought to cut, and added $18 million to pay for additional federal agents and to launch a National Gang Intelligence Center.

Gang assault In Bellmore, Long Island (Bellmore and Long Island, NY): Nassau County police are investigating a gang assault in Bellmore. Police say three young men assaulted a 25-year-old man and his 21-year-old brother inside the Powerhouse Gym in Bellmore at 8:40 last night.
