Lakewood shootings (Lakewood, CA): One man was fatally shot and another wounded in Lakewood, authorities said. The victims were stopped in traffic, seated in their vehicle, when they were approached by a suspect who asked the victims their gang affiliations. The victims said they were not in a gang. The suspect then took out a handgun and shot into the vehicle, striking both victims numerous times. The passenger died at an area hospital, and the driver was in stable condition. No arrests have been made.

Man shot to death in Coney Island housing project (Coney Island, NY): One man was killed, and two others were critically wounded in what witnesses say was rival gang gunfire in a Coney Island housing project. One resident said it was common knowledge in the public housing buildings that gangs were battling over control of the drug trade. Police have no suspects in the shooting.

Walk-up shooting (Los Angeles, CA): A man was shot after being asked to reveal his gang affiliation, police said. The man was walking home from a friend's house when two men approached him and asked about his gang affiliation. The man denied having any affiliation, ran away, and was shot by one of the men, police said. The victim did not suffer any life-threatening wounds.

Suspect charged as adult in San Jose gang slaying (San Jose, CA): A 16-year-old boy was charged with one count of murder, with gun and gang enhancements, for the gang-related shooting death of a 22-year-old man. Prosecutors allege that the victim was a member of the Sureno street gang and that the shooter is a member of the Norteno gang Varrio Horseshoe. This is the second time in a little over a month that prosecutors have used their authority under the state's Proposition 21 to bypass a hearing before a juvenile judge to determine whether a minor suspect should be charged as an adult. If convicted of all the charges, the boy faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

Man suffers injuries in gang-related fight (Fremont, CA): A man was stabbed during a gang-related brawl in Fremont, police said. The victim was transported to a local hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said. The incident will be investigated by the Fremont Police Department's Gang Task Force.

Five arrested in Club Diamond brawl (Fort Pierce, FL): Five people were arrested after a possible gang-related brawl in a parking lot outside a club. According to police, approximately 200 people gathered outside of Club Diamond as the fights escalated. Police estimated between 40 and 60 people were involved in fights in different parts of the parking lot. The five people arrested face charges that include disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and fighting. One alleged participant reportedly told police that the incident stemmed from a dispute between members of the 29th Street and 13th Street gangs.

Woman injured in drive-by at restaurant (Columbia, SC): A woman standing in line at a restaurant was injured during a drive-by shooting. Two men were walking outside the restaurant when someone fired shots from a passing vehicle. A restaurant window was shattered, and two cars were struck by gunfire during the shooting. The injured woman was struck by an unknown object. The two intended targets fled after the shooting. No arrests have been made.

Suspect sentenced in Weathersby shooting (Pasadena, CA): A reputed gang member was sentenced to multiple terms of life in prison for the drive-by shooting that wounded a Cincinnati Bengals cornerback. Officials said the man was sentenced to two life terms plus one term of 25 years to life. He was found guilty of attempting to murder two men on April 20, 2003. The two men were allegedly shot at because they were mistaken for rival gang members. He was also convicted of two counts of shooting from a motor vehicle and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Anti-gang force taking criminals to task (Northern Virginia): An anti-gang task force in Northern Virginia has made more than 200 arrests since it formed in July. Police have made 65 felony and 137 misdemeanor arrests and seized 46 weapons, 208 grams of cocaine, 31 grams of heroine, and 20 grams of marijuana. Virginia's attorney general formed the statewide task force in July, which is comprised of police officers and officials from Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties, as well as Herndon, Leesburg, Manassas, and Manassas Park. Fairfax county police estimate that there are 4,300 gang members in Northern Virginia. In addition to the task force, county officials have also scheduled community forums to talk about gang problems. Police believe that increased gang activity is the result of immigrants coming from El Salvador.

Three arrested following fight (Anchorage, AK): Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old man with assault and weapons misconduct in connection with a shooting in east Anchorage. Officials believe the incident was between two rival youth gangs. The fight began between two individuals but escalated into a melee involving at least eight people. Two 16-year-old boys were also charged with disorderly conduct. No injuries were reported in the shooting.

Three people injured in gang attack (Worcester, MA): Two teenagers, ages 16 and 17, and a 38-year-old man were attacked by a group of men with swords, pool cues, and a metal stick during a gang-related altercation in the Gates Street neighborhood, police said. According to witnesses, the suspects were in their cars, and the two teens were sitting on a street. The suspects pulled up in their vehicles and attacked the 16-year-old and 17-year-old, according to a police report. The 38-year-old witnessed the attack and was attacked while trying to help. The three victims were taken to a local hospital and their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Police said the suspects are believed to be in an Asian gang known as the Blackbirds. No arrests have been made.

Man convicted of accessory charge in slaying (Alamogordo, NM): A Clovis man who was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old Alamogordo man last year has been convicted of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and tampering with evidence. The shooting, which occurred on March 11, 2003, was gang-related, according to an attorney. The man was the first of the seven indicted to go to trial.

Five arrests made in September killing of Long Island man near his home (Mineola, NY): Police arrested five people, four men and one woman, for allegedly killing a 37-year-old man during a gang-related robbery attempt. The four men are self-proclaimed members of the Latin Kings street gang, and their motivation was simply to go out and steal from other people, police said. The victim was said to be a random target for the five assailants' crime spree in southwestern Nassau.

Joint effort to fight gang activity announced (Buffalo, NY): Top area law enforcement and government officials pledged a joint probe of gang activity in Buffalo as six people were indicted in a November robbery scheme at a Cheektowaga hotel. The joint probe was announced as three men and three women, all from Buffalo, were indicted on robbery and other charges linked to a holdup of some men in a Cheektowaga hotel room. Authorities say the incident involved prostitution.

Twelfth local resident admits Boot Camp membership (Syracuse, NY): A 25-year-old Syracuse man has admitted being a member of the Boot Camp street gang. The man pleaded guilty in federal court to a racketeering conspiracy charge, admitting he was a Boot Camp member and sold crack cocaine on the South Side, an assistant U.S. attorney said. His guilty plea was the 12th from the 26 alleged Boot Camp members indicted last summer. Under federal sentencing guidelines, he is likely to get no more than 12 1/2 years in prison.

Wanted gang leader nabbed in Harbor Gateway (Los Angeles, CA): The reputed leader of the Soul Brothers street gang, who was wanted on narcotics and conspiracy charges, was apprehended by U.S. marshals in the Harbor Gateway area, officials said. The 56-year-old man was being sought on an August 2003 warrant charging him with possession with intent to distribute phencyclidine or PCP, operating "laboratories" that made the narcotic, and arranging the purchase of the chemicals needed to produce it.

Two hurt in shooting (Madera, CA): Two male juveniles suffered minor wounds after being shot from gunfire between two vehicles in northeast Madera. The two vehicles were in a chase when someone inside a truck opened fire and hit the two males walking down a street. The suspects are described as Hispanic men, authorities said. Police believe the shooting is gang-related.

Gang sweep on Long Island (Islip, NY): Federal prosecutors announced charges against 30 alleged gang members, accusing them of gang-related violence across Long Island. The charges involve five murders, including that of a 14-year-old boy who was shot in September while riding his bicycle. Prosecutors believe he was mistaken for a member of a rival gang because he was dressed in blue. Other charges involve a firebombing, drive-by shootings, stabbings, robberies, and drug deals dating to the late 1990s. Officials said the suspects included leaders of the Bloods gang in Nassau, MS-13, and a lesser-known gang calling itself "Murder Unit" on the North Fork. Seven of those charged face a possible death penalty, and many others face life in prison. The gang roundup took place over the last month, after an investigation that had been under way for years, authorities said.

Two Santa Clara teens stable after unprovoked stabbing (Sunnyvale, CA): Two teenagers, ages 15 and 16, were wounded after an apparently unprovoked attack outside a pizza parlor in Sunnyvale, police said. Authorities say the male suspect, between 16 to 20 years old, fled the scene with another male after he stabbed the victims. "We believe it's possibly gang-related, but it's important to note that this is an unprovoked attack," an officer said. "We don't have any evidence that our victims did anything other than just be present there at the pizza parlor."

Suspect held in shooting death (South Valley, NM): Police arrested a 20-year-old man who they believe killed a 21-year-old man and wounded a teen. The shooting appears to be gang-related. Officials say the two men may have intended to meet at the Tom Tenorio Memorial Park to fight when the incident occurred.
