Teens found guilty in fatal gang initiation (Memphis, TN): Six teenagers were found responsible today for the beating death of a 15-year-old during a gang initiation at a Memphis school. The decision by a Juvenile Court referee amounts to a reckless homicide conviction for the young males, age 13 to 15.

Gang homicides not on rise, police say (Tucson, AZ): Monday's fatal shooting of Ian Lynn Townsend, 20, a week after a suspected gang-related shooting death at an East Side bar doesn't mean gang homicides are on the rise, police said. Officers believe Townsend was affiliated with a gang, based on his tattoos and clothing, said Sgt. Marco Borboa, a Tucson police spokesman.

A new front in the graffiti fight (Canby, OR): City officials, concerned by the spread of gang-related graffiti, are considering an ordinance that would require property owners to promptly restore vandalized property. Canby prohibits graffiti and the possession of materials used to create graffiti but has no way to compel anyone to erase it.

158 arrested in Long Island gang crackdown (Hauppauge, NY): Some 158 people have been arrested, 66 of them for alleged gang activity in Huntington Station. The Suffolk District Attorney's office said the area was earmarked after 58 shootings happened over the last 9 months, including one shooting outside the Huntington Station Intermediate School.
