Toppenish gang member gets 90-plus years for '09 shooting death (Toppenish, WA): Amid heavy security, a Toppenish gang member was sentenced Thursday to more than 90 years in prison for the 2009 shooting death of a rival gang member. Fabian Arredondo's sentence of 1,083 months is among the stiffest ever handed down in Yakima County Superior Court, stemming in part from tough new gang enhancements passed by the Legislature three years ago.

'Cool down' operation launched after last weekend's gang violence leads to four arrests, Portland police say (Portland, OR): After last week's fatal shooting of 25-year-old Deandre Clark that caused two retaliatory shootings in two days, Portland police stepped up patrols and launched a "cool down" operation targeting known gang spots in the city.
