Gang shootings — and homicides — still rare in Elgin (Elgin, IL): For the second year in a row, this city of 105,000 got almost halfway through the year without a single person being murdered. This year, it happened last Thursday, June 7, when 16-year-old Nestor A. Alvarado of Elgin was killed in what police believe to be a gang shooting. Police: Kansas gangs using social media (Wichita, KS): Gang members in the Wichita area have been using social media to recruit, organize and to get out their messages, police said. Gangs, such as Crips and the Spanish Gangster Disciples, have their own Facebook fan pages and have been posting pictures of social events, adding friends and commenting on posts "just like everyone else," said Detective Chad Beard of the Wichita Police Department's gang and felony assault unit.

Police hope to pressure property owners over gang activity (Gastonia, NC) : A bill widely endorsed by state lawmakers would give more leeway to law enforcement agencies to pressure street gangs into obeying the law. The legislation, known as the N.C. Street Gang Nuisance Abatement Act, was still in the process of being reviewed by Gov. Bev Perdue as of Thursday. It passed the House 111-1 on Wednesday and previously passed the Senate 49-0.
