Gangs in Union County (Scotch Plains, NJ): On Thursday, November 17, concerned members of the community, law enforcement, and clergy came together at the Scotch Plains Police Academy to raise awareness and learn about gang activity in Union County. Gang member sentenced to 25 years (Sandusky, OH): A convicted gang member was sentenced to 25 years in prison Monday morning. One of Denarea Swain's attorneys maintained that Swain was only part of a rap group, not a criminal gang, and asked the judge for the minimum sentenced.

Gang numbers and violence are on the rise in Idaho prisons, even as gang crime such as drive-by shootings are way down (Nampa-Caldwell, ID): Nearly half of the 392 inmates at Idaho's maximum-security prison last month were identified as gang members. And of the 7,145 total prisoners at the state's varied prisons and work centers, more than 18 percent — 1,311 — were identified as gang members. That's up from about 16 percent in May 2010.

Gangs, membership on the rise in Delaware (Dover, DE): Delaware State Police said they've identified about 1,000 members of 80 gangs in the state, including the Latin Kings. That's up from 720 members of 79 gangs last year, said spokesman Sgt. Paul Shavack. State police and the Delaware Information and Analysis Center, which compiles intelligence from police departments throughout the state, have been actively tracking gang membership for only a few years, he said.
