FBI says gang activity in El Paso, West Texas focuses on drug activity (El Paso, TX): Gang activity in El Paso and West Texas is focused mostly on drug trafficking, FBI El Paso officials said. "El Paso is very unique in our gang activity," FBI Supervisory Special Agent Paul Davis said. "It's very different than Chicago, different than New York due to us being along the border. It presents an opportunity for every gang member to basically have direct connections to drug suppliers along the border."

IllinoisWill County probes slaying (Will County, IL): In Lockport Township, Will County Sheriff's Police are investigating a possible gang-related shooting that left a 20-year-old man dead. The victim was standing by a car when one or two men walked up to him, apparently quarreled with him, and then shot him, according to authorities. A motive for the shooting has not been identified, and no arrests have been made.

CaliforniaRichmond attack kills one, injures one (Richmond, CA): A 49-year-old man was killed, and a 25-year-old woman was wounded in a drive-by shooting in Richmond's Iron Triangle neighborhood, police said. Both were in a car when someone in another vehicle drove by and fired several times into their car. Police are trying to determine a motive. No arrests have been made.

CaliforniaTwo shot in Northeast Valley around daybreak (Pacoima, CA): The Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill Division are investigating an apparent gang-related shooting that left a 23-year-old wounded. He was shot while standing in front of his home as a gunman drove by. A second 40-year-old victim was wounded during an argument with another gunman near an intersection, police said. No arrests have been made in these separate attacks.

IllinoisDrive-by shooting leaves two dead (Chicago, IL): Two men, ages 24 and 30, were killed in an alleged drive-by shooting on South Side, Chicago police said. The two men were sitting in a parked car when the shooting occurred. Police are seeking at least two suspects.

VirginiaBoy, 16, fatally shot in Richmond (Richmond, VA): A 16-year-old boy was killed during an apparent drive-by shooting on Richmond's North Side, according to police. Three male suspects are being sought by police in connection with the shooting.

New YorkGang tie to killing of bicyclist (Syracuse, NY): A 22-year-old male was fatally shot during a drive-by shooting in the south side of Syracuse, police said. The victim, who was a member of the Elk Block street gang, was gunned down by someone in a car as he rode his bicycle, police said. Police have not determined if the shooting was gang-related, but said the incident occurred in an area controlled by the Boot Camp gang. During the same week, a federal grand jury indicted 24 people for being members of the Boot Camp gang. They were accused of using systematic violence to control their territory and the drug trade they conducted there. Police say the investigation is progressing.

CaliforniaWoman killed in gang confrontation (Compton, CA): A man with an assault rifle killed a 23-year-old woman after asking her boyfriend about his gang affiliation, authorities said. The victim and her boyfriend were standing on a sidewalk when a car pulled up. A passenger asked what gang the boyfriend belonged to before firing at the couple. Investigation is continuing.

IllinoisThree boys hurt, one seriously, in drive-by (Chicago, IL): On the Northwest Side of Chicago, a 10-year-old boy was seriously wounded and two other teens, ages 15 and 17, were injured during a drive-by shooting, police said. Two of the victims were taken to hospitals, and one victim was treated at the scene. There were no suspects in custody.

ArizonaOne man killed, one wounded (Tucson, AZ): Tucson police are investigating a suspected gang shooting that killed a 22-year-old man and critically wounded a 23-year-old man. Police say that both victims were affiliated with the same gang. No other information was available.

IllinoisTwo slayings tied to gang war (Chicago, IL): Chicago police are searching for three suspects who allegedly killed two men and injured one in a South Side gang war. Two men were shot when the suspects came out of a building, and another was chased around the building and shot by an assailant, witnesses said. The shootings were part of a dispute that began when the city relocated residents to a different housing project and the gang factions struggled for control of the neighborhood. Police have not made any arrests.

CaliforniaGang and drug bust (Paramount, CA): About 100 gang enforcement officers arrested ten people and seized a half-ton of marijuana in 15 homes in Los Angeles County. The drug probe was spawned by a gang-related shooting earlier this month in Paramount.

TennesseeShooting wake-up call on street gangs (Chattanooga, TN): Officials in Chattanooga are responding to a recent spate of shootings by looking at the possibility of a growing trend of youth street gangs. "This may be a wake-up call. I'm sure we have them. I don't think the gang activity has gotten to a point where the public realizes we may have a problem," an official said. Chattanooga Police Department reported 17 active street gangs in the city and two gang-related homicides in 2002. Although there is a decrease in active gangs from 22 in 2001, police say it does not mean gangs have gone away.

IllinoisChicago man charged in shooting of 15-year-old boy (Chicago, IL): A 19-year-old Chicago man was charged with attempted murder for a shooting that seriously injured a 15-year-old boy, police said. After a gang-related confrontation with the victim, the suspect fired a gun three times. The victim was in intensive care, but police say his wounds were not life-threatening.

New YorkCharged in deadly gang rite (Harlem, NY): Police charged a 19-year-old man with manslaughter in the death of a 16-year-old during an alleged gang initiation rite in Harlem. The suspect told police he belongs to a small gang called the Bone Thugs, a group of Harlem-based "rapper wanna-bes," according to police. A 14-year-old boy, who is a friend of the victim, said the suspect and victim were not supposed to hit one another in the face. "They were throwing body punches, they were supposed to be fighting for 30 seconds, but it only lasted 10 seconds," the boy said. The suspect, charged with second-degree manslaughter, could face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

CaliforniaWoman wounded in knee in suspected gang shooting (Anaheim, CA): Police are investigating a shooting that wounded an Anaheim woman. The woman was driving her car when a man and another woman in a van allegedly shot her after the female in the van yelled a gang slogan. Although the woman injured was not a gang member, police said that the shooting was still considered gang-related.

IllinoisGang ties probed in hotel fight (Aurora, IL): A party with about 200 people turned into a brawl at the North Aurora Inn parking lot, police reported. Witnesses told police that the fight was gang-related. Three officers suffered minor wounds, but no other major injuries were reported. According to reports, a 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with reckless driving and resisting an officer after attempting to flee the area in his vehicle.

CaliforniaEight held in cross-fire slaying of teacher (Long Beach, CA): Eight alleged gang members were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 52-year-old woman as she and her 12-year-old son, who was shot in the shoulder, were passing by in their car, police said. Police allege it was a gang-related shooting, but the victim was not the intended target. A 22-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder. The other seven people were arrested on unrelated charges but are believed to be involved in the shooting, said a Long Beach police officer.

IllinoisMore officers for gang effort (Chicago, IL): Due to increased murders this year in Chicago, officials announced a plan to deploy 100 highly-trained police officers to the city's most gang-ridden neighborhoods in an effort to curb violent crime. In addition, the mayor plans to re-assign 450 gang crimes officers to the city's most troubled communities.

CaliforniaMan injured by stray gang shots (Van Nuys, CA): A 54-year-old man was wounded during an apparent gang-related shooting, police said. The victim was visiting with friends at an apartment building when shots were fired by a group of four or five men. No arrests have been made.
