FBI says gang activity in El Paso, West Texas focuses on drug activity (El Paso, TX): Gang activity in El Paso and West Texas is focused mostly on drug trafficking, FBI El Paso officials said. "El Paso is very unique in our gang activity," FBI Supervisory Special Agent Paul Davis said. "It's very different than Chicago, different than New York due to us being along the border. It presents an opportunity for every gang member to basically have direct connections to drug suppliers along the border."

Three men are wounded outside bar (Sacramento, CA): Police are investigating a possible gang-related incident in which three young men were shot outside a local nightclub. The men had been denied entry into the club and got into an argument with another group of people, police said. Shots were fired, and a car was seen leaving the area. The three men were treated at local hospitals. No arrests have been made.

Four injured in shooting attacks (Boston and Dorchester, MA): State Police are investigating an apparent drive-by shooting in South Boston in which three people suffered non-life threatening wounds. In another shooting, a 25-year-old male pedestrian was wounded when one or two suspects opened fire. According to reports, he did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. This shooting came only three days after a 3-year-old girl was shot in the same neighborhood. Police have no suspects.

Teen killed in drive-by (Porterville, CA): A 15-year-old boy was killed and his 14-year-old cousin was injured in a drive-by shooting on the Fourth of July. The victims were standing in front of a home when bullets were fired. No other information was available.

Funding cuts hinder Salinas gang intervention program (Salinas, CA): The Second Chance Youth Program, Salina's gang intervention program, has recently seen their funding cut. Federal and state grants were eliminated due to cost-saving purposes. The Executive Director of the program estimates they will only be able to help 400 teens this year compared to 4,000 last year. "We will still be working together with other nonprofits, like Partners for Peace, because we are all in this together," he said. "But I know we won't be in the schools like we were, right where the kids need us."

Two people shot on city's south side (Oklahoma City, OK): Oklahoma City police are investigating a possible gang-related shooting in which two pedestrians were wounded. The two victims were walking with a third person when five Hispanic men and one Hispanic woman approached them. A conversation occurred and someone in the larger group shot at those in the other group, police said. No arrests have been made.

Boy wounded in legs in shooting (Hemet, CA): A 14-year-old boy was shot in the legs in an apparent drive-by shooting, Hemet police reported. The boy was found lying on the hood of a car with gunshot wounds when police arrived. Police say that the shooting was gang-related.

Slain honor student loved basketball (Sacramento, CA): Police arrested an 18-year-old male for fatally shooting a 15-year-old girl as she left a party. Authorities say the death was the result of gang-related violence, and prosecutors will seek a sentence enhancement. An officer said that gang members were in attendance at the party, and as the party was ending, so was a confrontation between alleged gang members. Witnesses say two or three men opened fire at the car the victim was in. Several others were in the car, as well as her cousin who was wounded. Detectives are unsure of the intended target.

Shooting death may be gang-related (Fort Mill, SC): York County authorities are investigating a homicide that may have been gang-related. The victim, a 21-year-old male, was found in a grassy field east of Teca Cay where he had been shot several times, authorities said. He was wearing clothes that associated him with Latino gang activity and also had two tattoos linking him to the Salvadoran gang, Mara Salvatrucha 13. No arrests have been made.

Des Moines gangs a growing problem, police say (Des Moines, IA) : A Latino street gang with an alleged link to a Des Moines teacher has grown in strength by recruiting members from local schools, police said. Police recently stopped the teacher, along with four gang members in her car, after reports of the occupants pointing a gun at another motorist. Police allege that the members are part of the Latin Pachucos gang. The four members were all arrested, and charges included carrying a concealed weapon, aggravated assault with a firearm, criminal gang participation, and falsifying documents. Police are seeing a rebirth of gang activity in the city as other Latino gangs all have shown growth. Other Latino gangs in Des Moines are La Raza Trace, La Raza Loca, Hang Out Boys, Aztec Kings and Aztec Queens, and Florencia 13, police said.

Lancaster man shot, wounded in drive-by (Lancaster, CA): A 31-year-old Lancaster man suffered life-threatening wounds during a drive-by shooting, police say. Two men were described to have been the alleged shooters, according to reports. Investigators have not been able to determine whether the shooters or the victim were members of a gang.

Police seek three men in stabbing (Tulare, CA): Police are looking for three suspects they have identified to be responsible for a gang-related stabbing that injured a 20-year-old man. The victim was walking alone in a neighborhood when three men approached him and stabbed him several times in his back, right hand, and forearm. No weapon was recovered and no motive has been established, but police say the suspects and the victim all have gang affiliations.

Murder charges filed (Lodi, CA): San Joaquin County prosecutors have filed murder charges against three teenagers accused in a gang-related fatal shooting last month. Additional charges filed were attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and street terrorism charges. The three allegedly fired handguns that killed a 19-year-old male and wounded another man at a party on June 24 in Lodi.

16-year-old shot to death on porch (Aurora, IL): In East Aurora, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot and a 21-year-old man suffered minor wounds in a gang-related shooting, police said. The victim and other people were on his porch when the alleged shooter fired shots from between two homes. The shooter chased the group after they fled the porch for cover, police said. Police are trying to determine whether the victim or someone else on the porch was the intended target in the shooting.

Police seek suspects in two slayings (Los Angeles, CA): In the harbor area of Los Angeles, police are looking for information on two separate shootings that left a 20-year-old male and 15-year-old female dead. The male was shot after he left his job at the Harbor City Recreation Center, police said. The second victim was shot by passengers in a car as she stood with a group of teenagers in an alley behind a house. Police believe this random shooting was gang-related.

Killings called gang-related executions (Las Vegas, NV): Two men, ages 23 and 25, were shot execution-style at a North Las Vegas apartment complex by rival gang members, police said. According to reports, a man, two women, and five small children were walking with the two victims moments before the shooting. Investigators report that prior to the shooting, there was an argument over turf between the victims and the assailants. Both victims were chased and shot at point-blank range, police said.

Durham teen shot to death (Durham, NC): A 15-year-old boy was killed and a woman was wounded during a possible drive-by shooting, police said. Both were at a local food mart when someone in a passing van opened fire. Police have not made any arrests and do not have any solid leads on suspects.

Police think slaying suspect still in Athens (Athens, GA): Athens-Clarke police are searching for a 21-year-old male for malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a deadly weapon in the commission of a crime. The victim, a 28-year-old male, was allegedly shot in the Bethel Homes gated apartment complex and later died at a hospital. Police do not know the motive for the shooting. The victim's brother vowed vengeance against "the TrapBoyz," which is reportedly a local rap group.

Crips target of prison lockdown (Sacramento, CA): Authorities at Corcoran State Prison have locked the African-American general-population inmates in their cells as they investigate whether incarcerated members of the Crips street gang are conspiring to attack prison staffers in retaliation for the anticipated execution of the gang's co-founder. Last month, correctional officers at Corcoran discovered a so-called "kite," or written message, directing Crips to attack and kill high-ranking prison staff members. Two other prisons, Pelican Bay in northern California and Salinas Valley in Soledad, have also locked down about 3,800 inmates of all races because of recent assaults on staff members by African-American inmates.

Cicero cops seek suspect in 19-year-old's slaying (Cicero, IL): Cicero police are looking for a man they believe shot and killed a 19-year-old Cicero man and wounded two others, ages 20 and 22. In what police say was a gang-related shooting, the suspect, believed to be a gang member, allegedly approached the victim and his alleged fellow gang members as they were about to enter a tavern, police said. There were eight or ten people involved, and the situation escalated from words being exchanged to gunshots.

Inmate fight is investigated (Cook County, IL): The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department is investigating a gang-related prison fight at Cook County Jail that sent five inmates to area hospitals with stab wounds. Authorities say more than 16 inmates were involved in the fight, and none of the injuries were life-threatening. Authorities say the inmates may face additional charges.
