Three people arrested in rash of shootings (Saginaw, MI): Saginaw police arrested three people and seized drugs, guns, and ammunition, while executing a search warrant at a home that was the scene of a drive-by shooting earlier in the week. Police were investigating a series of shootings that left one dead and nine injured prior to the arrests. While police are unsure if all the incidents are related, they believe gangs know police have been hindered by recent budget cuts, and say the shootings reflect the growing disdain gangs have for law enforcement.

One dead, two hurt in drive-by shooting (San Bernardino, CA): A drive-by shooting in the Delmann Heights section of San Bernardino left a 14-year-old girl dead and two others wounded. The girl was sitting with two friends in a car outside her home, when another vehicle drove past the car and opened fire. The number, identities, and motive of the shooters were not immediately determined.

Man grazed in head in drive-by shooting (Yonkers, NY): Police are investigating a drive-by shooting in Yonkers that left a 21-year-old male wounded, according to police. Three suspects were in the car when one of them fired three shots, grazing the victim in the head. The pedestrian refused medical attention. No arrests have been made.

Police investigate drive-by shooting and assault on woman (Columbus, GA): Columbus Police are searching for suspects involved in a drive-by-shooting and an assault. The first incident was a drive-by shooting in which a round of gunfire struck a home with a man, woman, and two children inside. No one was injured in that incident, which remains under investigation. The most recent incident under investigation is an assault on a 25-year-old woman who was held at gunpoint by two men who forced their way into the home, threatened her life, and demanded to speak with her estranged husband. The woman suffered scratches and bruises, but was not seriously injured. Police do not know the motive for the two attacks, which may be related.

City police establish gang unit (Columbia, SC): Columbia police created a special gang unit to help prevent gang activity in the last days of school. Along with the gang unit, there are plans for programs to help students avoid gangs. "The issue is - whatever the level of gang activity - we're trying to do everything we can to combat and fight that activity," said the Mayor. "Gangs are all over the nation; we are not immune." A Gang Interdiction Unit is the "core" of the city's anti-gang initiative, a police department press release said. The unit won't cost additional tax dollars, an officer said, because two detectives in the car theft unit at department headquarters will be re-assigned to the gang unit. Car thefts will be handled by district investigators.

Reno police seek suspects in gang shooting (Reno, NV): In a gang-related shooting, police are looking for suspects who shot two bullets into a bedroom of a known gang member's home. No one was injured, but police believe there was intent to hit the resident. In another gang-related incident, a man in Sparks was stabbed in the chest, police said. The victim was released from the hospital, and an adult and two juveniles were arrested.

Gang Injunction (Long Beach, CA) : Long Beach officials announced an injuntion against the "Insane Crips Gang," one of the city's most violent street gangs. The civil action is intended to curb public drinking, drug dealing, tagging, vandalism, and other crimes.

Slain man identified (Fontana, CA): A 21-year-old man was fatally shot during a fight at a local restaurant, police said. The victim was ordering food when a man got out of a car and asked about gang affiliation. A fight began and the suspect went back to his car, got his handgun, and fired at the victim, police said. No arrests have been made.

Dorchester men charged in fatal shooting (Dorchester, MA): Two men, ages 19 and 17, were charged for the fatal drive-by shooting of a 22-year-old man in the South End of Dorchester, police said. The victim and a 24-year-old friend were in the front seat of a car, when a van drove up and at least one of the van's occupants opened fire, hitting both men. The friend was seriously injured. The 19-year-old was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and assault with intent to murder. The 17-year-old was charged as an accessory after the fact of murder.

Northside man killed in apparent drive-by shooting (Miami, FL): Police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man who died in an apparent drive-by shooting in Northside Miami. Investigators found about a dozen bullet casings in a roadway and by Poinciana Park Elementary School. No motive has been determined nor have any suspects been named.

Two brothers charged in gang shooting that claims rival member (Chicago, IL): Two brothers, ages 21 and 19, have been charged in the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old rival gang member at a West Chicago party. A fight broke out when uninvited rival gang members showed up at the party. Four other people were shot and wounded during the fight, police said. The older brother was charged with one count of first-degree murder and four counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. The younger brother was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of obstructing justice.

Deputy-involved shooting (Los Angeles, CA): A brief car chase in South Los Angeles left a teenage boy hospitalized in critical condition and one of his two alleged accomplices in custody, authorities said. The teen was shot when he and a 20-year-old male allegedly pointed handguns at deputies. Both were arrested and charged with attempted murder on a police officer. A third suspect, who was driving the vehicle, remains at large, police said. Detectives later determined that the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the evening, and that the suspects had fired shots at a group of men standing in front of a house; however, no one was wounded. The incident is being investigated as being gang-related, but the victims of that assault are not gang members, an officer said.

Trysts related to gang alleged (Hackensack, NJ): Two Hackensack teens, ages 18 and 17, have been charged with having sex with three 14-year-old girls as part of an initiation ritual into the Crips street gang, police said. The 17-year-old was served with a complaint for aggravated sexual assault in connection with the alleged initiation. The 18-year-old was charged with aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, possession and creation of child pornography, and initiation into a criminal street gang.

Monroe fears gangs are coming (Monroe, WA): Monroe Police are taking a proactive approach in stopping potential gang activity after an increase in graffiti and fighting of possible "wannabe" gang members. Though the city has not experienced problems with gang crime or activity, residents are being asked to report any activity that could be gang-related, including graffiti. The largest problem has been graffiti on businesses' walls, street signs, electrical boxes, and trash bins. One police officer who investigates activity suspected of being related to gangs said he believes some Hispanic gang members may be trying to recruit from the city's growing Latino population.

Gang fight leads to shots fired (Reno, NV): A gang-related confrontation outside St. Therese the Little Flower Church led to a bullet fired into a church window, officers said. Police said the suspect and his group appear to be gang members or associates. No one was injured and investigation continues.

West Chicago shootout kills one (Chicago, IL) : In West Chicago, a 23-year-old was shot and killed in what officials say was a gang-related shootout. Several others were injured, but it was not clear what condition they were in. Investigation is ongoing.

Gangs tag symbols on Bonita Elementary Buildings (Bonita Springs, FL): Authorities are investigating gang symbols that were tagged on four Bonita Springs Elementary buildings. An upside-down crown, a symbol of the Latin Kings, and the words "Vatos Locos," Spanish for "Crazy Guys," were spray-painted on several walls. "It certainly appears to be gang-related and we are treating it that way," said an official. He said that part of the investigation is to determine whether it was actual gang members or wannabes.

Shootings wound man, boy (Salinas, CA): Salinas police are investigating two gang-related shootings that left a 24-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy wounded. Police believe the incident involving the 24-year-old was gang-related based on the actions and statements of the subject. "He was just sitting in the car at that area, and the suspect made a statement and shot him in the face," an officer said. The other shooting occurred when a 15-year-old boy was walking home from a store with a friend. Gang members confronted them and attacked them, police said. The boy suffered a bullet wound to the leg. Police are not sure if the two shootings are linked.

Police arrest 11 teens for fights (Tulare, CA): Tulare police arrested 11 juveniles after multiple fights broke out at a local restaurant parking lot. The fights started when a car was vandalized in the Tulare Union High School parking lot. The juveniles were arrested on suspicion of carrying baseball bats. Police did not know the cause for the fights or if they were gang-related.
