Passaic opens Myrtle Avenue police substation to fight gang violence (Passaic, NJ): Gang activity in the city's Second Ward is behind the new police substation on Myrtle Avenue near Monroe Street. Gang activity and violence are the most "pressing" public safety problem, Mayor Hector Lora said. Opening a substation in the neighborhood will allow parents to let their children outside to play.

First GBK Gang Member Pleads Guilty to Conspiring to Distribute Crack Cocaine (Pittsburgh, PA): A resident of Pittsburgh, PA, pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of conspiracy to distribute a quantity of crack cocaine, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today. Bryan Smith, age 24, pleaded guilty to one count before Senior United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab.

Broken relationships with the Juarez drug cartel, large-scale police investigations and infighting kept El Paso-based gang Barrio Azteca labeled as a "Tier 2" threat in Texas for a few years with the Bloods and the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.

Rock Hill Gang Member Sentenced to Federal Prison (Columbia, SC): United States Attorney Sherri A. Lydon stated that Kenterius Dyshae Hinton, age 24, of Rock Hill, was sentenced to 36 months (3 years) imprisonment, which will be followed by 3 years of supervised release. This past September, Hinton plead guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The billboards read: “I ain’t from nowhere – I don’t gangbang.” The saying is a reference to a cryptic expression used by gang members, often before they take someone’s life.

How one NJ county is stopping kids from joining gangs (Cumberland County, NJ): An effort is underway in South Jersey to combat gang and gun violence, an effort that could serve a model for other parts of the Garden State. Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said authorities are teaming up with the state Juvenile Justice Commission, housing authorities in Bridgeton, Millville and Vineland, school districts and faith-based groups to develop programs to help teach kids how to reject gangs.

20 People Detained, 4 Arrested Related to Alleged Illegal Casino in Pomona (Pomona, CA): Three women and one man were arrested for allegedly operating an illegal casino in Pomona, authorities said Saturday. The Pomona Police Department's Major Crimes Task Force and SWAT team served a search warrant Friday at 1224 South Garey Ave., where they believed an illegal gambling casino was operating and that several Pomona gang members went there, Corporal J. Hernandez said.
