Gangs in Indian Country

Who Should Attend:

This 3½-day class provides basic, entry-level training to officers newly assigned to work with street gangs who may have limited experience and little formal training in street gang investigations. Tribal law enforcement officers will be given priority for attendance, but the class is also appropriate for local officers who routinely work with tribal authorities.

  • Gangs 101—basic information necessary to understand street gangs

  • Native American Gangs: Trends and Dynamics—national overview of Native American gangs

  • Regional Gang Overview—specific gangs affecting tribal lands in the region in which the class is held

  • Gang Intelligence—intelligence collection and the role of gang investigators in the process

  • Gang Suppression—strategies and tactics that have been effective in suppressing gang activity

  • Gang Investigations—unique nature of gang investigations and gang crime scenes

  • Legal Considerations—use of gang-specific legislation in the investigation and prosecution of gang crime

  • Resources and Programs—utilization of the community as an essential partner in gang reduction efforts
