Murder in Providence is up, but violent crime overall is down (Providence, RI): The city saw an increase in homicides in 2014, from 14 in 2013 to 20, but other violent crimes, including sex offenses and robberies, were less frequent. The total number of crimes declined 15 percent from the 2013 calendar year and violent crimes, including murder, sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault, dropped 20 percent, according to preliminary data released Friday.

Legislation on gang activity faces fervent backlash (Providence, RI): When Gov. Lincoln Chafee ’75 P’14 P’17 signed gang sentencing enhancement legislation into law on July 1, he did so amidst widespread community opposition. Under the legislation, known as “criminal street gang enhancement,” prosecutors can seek an additional 10-year sentence for “any person who is convicted of any felony that is knowingly committed for the benefit, at the direction of, or in association with any criminal street gang or criminal street gang member.”
