City's anti-gang laws ineffective (Albuquerque, NM): Two city ordinances passed four years ago to try and curtail Albuquerque’s gang problem have been so ineffective they might as well not even exist. Current estimates put the number of gangs in the city of Albuquerque at more than 100 with more than 7,000 active gang members.

Fight at Onate High School ends with stab wounds (Las Cruces, NM): A fight between two male students at a Las Cruces high school left one boy in the hospital and another in police custody. A witness to the fight, who did not want to be identified, told KFOX14 that she saw the boys fist-fighting each other when one of them took out a knife. "They were screaming a sign, a gang-related sign," the witness said.

Gang activity up in Las Cruces (Las Cruces, NM): Officers with the Las Cruces Police Department gang unit said gang activity not only appears to be up, but gangs are also committing more violent crimes than they have in the past.
