After 6 years, Milwaukee police gang unit restored, ready to roll (Milwaukee, WI): For the first time in nearly six years, the Milwaukee Police Department has a gang unit aimed at slashing violent crime and dismantling gangs. A key reform by new Chief Nannette Hegerty, the Gang Crimes Unit will finish training this week and be in full force next week. Some members are already on the job.

Shooting incident stuns Fresno neighborhood (Fresno, CA): Hours after Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer spoke about a crackdown on gangs and violent parolees, about thirty rounds from an assault weapon ripped through an east-central neighborhood. Nineteen people, including children, were inside the targeted house. One adult was hit by either bullet fragments or flying pieces of broken glass, police reported.

Gang activity is causing concern (Niagara Falls, NY): Police are dealing with an increase in gang activity in recent weeks, including two incidents Monday that brought the total to about a dozen in the past month. Police officers were called at 9:30 p.m. to two incidents in the City Market on Pine Avenue involving large groups of teenagers armed with knives and sticks. That call came just days after stepping up patrols in response to a Thursday night gang incident that left one officer severely injured, police said.

Elgin residents complain about police after gang shooting (Elgin, IL): A crackdown on gang activity in an Elgin neighborhood apparently has only been half successful. About 60 residents of the Sunset Park neighborhood Monday evening met with police to discuss an April 25 incident in which police say gang members shot at two officers - and how police handled the incident.

Police say Hispanic gangs a growing threat (Rockford, IL): Police estimate that there are 1,000 members of about 10 street gangs active in the Rockford area at any given time. Early Monday morning, one group confirmed its existence with a hail of flaming gasoline-filled bottles pitched at the homes of its rivals. Police believe the firebombings of homes in the 400 block of South Chicago Avenue, the 2000 block of Ninth Street and the 900 block of West Street indicate that at least two of the city's three major Hispanic gangs - the Latin Kings, the Latin Counts and the Surenos 13 - are at war.

Salinas sees typical string of shootings (Salinas, CA): Warmer weather, a seasonal rise in the Salinas population and the cyclical nature of gang violence all likely contributed to this past weekend's surge of bloodshed in the city, gang experts say. On Friday and Saturday night, four shootings occurred in Salinas - at least three of them gang-related and one of them fatal - breaking a four-month lull in gang homicides.

Rader workers injured in brawl (Tulsa, OK): A brawl between rival Tulsa gang members injured several staff members at the Lloyd E. Rader Center on Tuesday, officials said. Rhonda Burgess, a spokeswoman for the Office of Juvenile Affairs, said a group of Rader residents from rival Tulsa gangs began fighting about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Teen charged in stabbing incident (Oshkosh, WI): A Green Bay teen could receive a prison sentence of more than 18 years if convicted on a charge related to an April 24 stabbing outside the Oshkosh Boys and Girls Club. Shoua Lor, 19, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment in Winnebago County Circuit Court on Monday. The criminal complaint states that a 17-year-old stepped outside a dance at the club and was stabbed in the right side of the chest.

46 arrested in gang crime crackdown (San Diego, CA): Police arrested 46 people and issued 101 misdemeanor citations over the weekend during a crackdown on gang crime, authorities said yesterday. Assistant Chief Lou Scanlon said the concentration on gang crime will continue indefinitely and that extra officers could be on duty any night of the week to deal with any increase in violence. Despite the effort, four people were shot and wounded in incidents in Mission Valley, Lomita and Mountain View late Saturday and Sunday.

Major raid targeted 140 homes (Pomona, CA): In a show of force aimed at the city's oldest and largest gangs, an army of police took to the streets before dawn Monday, arresting 51 people in a crackdown triggered by the recent courthouse shooting of a California Highway Patrol officer. The operation, which many officers said was the largest they'd ever seen, targeted 140 homes where gang members on parole or probation were thought to live.

Experts tally numbers of area gangs (Newark, CA): There are at least 17 organized gangs in the Tri-City area comprised of nearly 1,800 members, according to figures compiled by the Southern Alameda County Gang Task Force. "Newark and Fremont are very similar in the level of gang activity," said Officer Mike Carroll of the gang task force. "It's steady. It's not as bad as other areas [like Hayward.] ... Union City may be a little higher than Fremont."

Authorities identified the dead man as Christopher Antwon Little, 18.

Crackdown on street violence is under way (San Diego, CA): A surge of violence in several San Diego neighborhoods has prompted an increase in police presence and a crackdown on even relatively minor crimes in those communities. Law enforcement officials said the response comes after four people were shot and killed and several others were hospitalized Sunday and early Monday in one of the more violent 30 hours on city streets.

Chief says gangs problem growing (Plant City, FL): Police Chief Bill McDaniel said his department is taking aim at gangs that are trying to gain a foothold in the city. McDaniel told city commissioners Monday that his officers have made 71 arrests of gang members in about 15 months. The chief said they will keep up the pressure but need tips from the public and perhaps the power of an antigraffiti ordinance.

174 gang suspects subject to arrest (Las Vegas, NV): A Las Vegas police crackdown on members of the Crips and Bloods street gangs has landed 26 gang members behind bars, and arrest warrants are outstanding for the remaining 174 targeted in the sweep. Twelve of the 26 gang members arrested, on suspicion of crimes ranging from misdemeanors to attempted murder, were still in jail Friday, but officers consider the effort a success, said Sgt. Ray Steiber of the department's Gang Crimes Bureau.

Feinstein urges tougher laws against gangs (California): U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein urged Congress on Thursday to renew the ban on assault weapons and pass legislation cracking down on gang violence, partly in response to the murder of a California Highway Patrol officer in Pomona. Feinstein's legislation, which she introduced with U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, would create new federal crimes targeting violent gang members and strengthens current laws against street gang crimes. It would also authorize $650 million for law enforcement and community groups for gang suppression, prevention, and intervention programs.
