US hits drug empire (Chicago, IL): With their leader in prison, top members of the Black Disciples were called to a South Side apartment building--"The Castle," the gang called it--to hear from their newly annointed "king." He told the assembled drug dealers that if they played by the "BD law," they would prosper. Violators would be beaten or killed by the Vanguard, the enforcers of the gang.

Web of violence: Garland police find that rival youths used chat rooms to set up the fight (Garland, TX): It was a clash born in cyberspace. But on March 3, the profanity-laden put-downs that had been exchanged over the Internet escalated into a street fight in Garland with low-tech weapons such as fists, bats and clubs. Several young people were injured, including one whose arm was broken.

Ten arrested in gang slaying (Garden Grove, CA): Police have arrested 10 people for killing a man in March in what investigators described as the last episode in a series of attacks between rival Asian gangs. Nhan Thanh Chuong, 24, of Santa Ana was killed March 19 along the 10100 block of Crosby Avenue. A second man survived his wounds.

Belvidere shooting gang-related (Belvidere, IL): Police are tying a recent drive-by shooting in Belvidere to gang violence in Rockford. Victor Vidal, 21, and Ariel Vidal, 20, both of Belvidere, were charged Tuesday with armed violence and were in the Boone County Jail on $250,000 bond. They face up to 15 years in prison if convicted. The pair are suspects in what police are calling a gang-related drive-by shooting Sunday.

Shooting at Merced high school leaves two injured (Merced, CA): Three people were arrested after a late afternoon shootout in a Merced high school wounded two teenagers. Julio Najar, a 19-year-old from Merced, is in stable condition after being airlifted to a Modesto hospital on Tuesday after the 5:25 p.m. shooting.

Injunction has Hollywood gang on the run (Hollywood, CA): Gang-related crime was cut in half so far this year in the Hollywood area after an aggressive injunction was used to target the city's largest gang. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo and Police Chief William Bratton said the falling crime rate marks the revival of Hollywood and that they want to put similar gang injunctions in place across the city.

Pixley teen's slaying linked to gang (Pixley, CA): A Pixley man was arraigned on murder charges this week in connection with the shooting death of 19-year-old Everado Marquez in the victim's home. A second suspect remains at large. Suspect Miguel Cisneros, 19, faces the special allegation that he used a firearm in the Thursday killing and that he committed a crime for the benefit of a street gang.

Crackdown on gangs results in 41 arrests (San Diego, CA): San Diego police arrested 41 people during the weekend as part of a continued crackdown on gang crime, bringing to 87 the number of people arrested since the effort began May 1, authorities said. The effort against gang crime will continue indefinitely, police said. Officers assigned to specialized units, including narcotics and gangs, have been moved into areas where an increase in crime has occurred.

The innocent pay (Sylmar, CA): Knowing the dangers of living in the northeast San Fernando Valley, Cecilia Cortez took precautions to ensure that her son's 16th birthday party would be safe. No alcohol was served. Plenty of adults served as chaperons, and security guards patted down guests for weapons at the door. But despite the family's efforts, at least a half-dozen suspected gang members forced their way into the Saturday night festivities and started a fight that ended in the shooting deaths of two innocent partygoers.

Police: Fight, firebombs linked (Rockford, IL): A fight in which Latin King gang members allegedly beat a man with bricks is believed to be linked to three firebombings, police say. According to court documents, several members of the Latin Kings attacked Jose Deleon on Wednesday. Deleon was hospitalized for injuries to his face and arm after a group of men beat him with bricks.

Three arrested in slaying of Visalia teen (Visalia, CA): A man and two boys were arrested Saturday in connection with the Friday night shooting death of a Visalia teenager, police reported. Albert Meek, 19, and two 16-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of murder after a traffic stop in the 800 block of South Santa Fe Avenue in Visalia.

Combating the grip of gangs (Fort Pierce, FL): Fort Pierce police have a new full-time intelligence analyst who compiles information on gangs around the county and makes the information available to officers on the street. That's good news to the department's Gang Task Force, a collection of officers and detectives who periodically sweep the city targeting gangs and drugs. All too often, the two are inseparable, said Lt. Frank Amandro, who runs the task force.

Boy killed (Los Angeles, CA): Authorities searched today for five young men, possibly teenagers, including one who fatally wounded a 14-year-old boy in a gang-related drive-by shooting in front of a South Los Angeles house. The boy was walking with two friends in the 1100 block of West 36th Place when a light-colored late-model sport utility vehicle pulled up next to them shortly before 8 p.m. yesterday, said Sgt. Stephen Faulk of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest Station.

Teen pleads innocent in CHP slaying (Pomona, CA): A 16-year-old boy pleaded innocent Thursday to murdering a California Highway Patrol officer in what authorities called a "random assassination" linked to street gang activity. Valentino Mitchell Arenas III entered the plea through his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Kent Thomas. Arenas was arraigned in Superior Court at the Pomona courthouse where authorities allege he fatally shot CHP officer Thomas J. Steiner on April 21.

After 6 years, Milwaukee police gang unit restored, ready to roll (Milwaukee, WI): For the first time in nearly six years, the Milwaukee Police Department has a gang unit aimed at slashing violent crime and dismantling gangs. A key reform by new Chief Nannette Hegerty, the Gang Crimes Unit will finish training this week and be in full force next week. Some members are already on the job.

Shooting incident stuns Fresno neighborhood (Fresno, CA): Hours after Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer spoke about a crackdown on gangs and violent parolees, about thirty rounds from an assault weapon ripped through an east-central neighborhood. Nineteen people, including children, were inside the targeted house. One adult was hit by either bullet fragments or flying pieces of broken glass, police reported.

Gang activity is causing concern (Niagara Falls, NY): Police are dealing with an increase in gang activity in recent weeks, including two incidents Monday that brought the total to about a dozen in the past month. Police officers were called at 9:30 p.m. to two incidents in the City Market on Pine Avenue involving large groups of teenagers armed with knives and sticks. That call came just days after stepping up patrols in response to a Thursday night gang incident that left one officer severely injured, police said.

Elgin residents complain about police after gang shooting (Elgin, IL): A crackdown on gang activity in an Elgin neighborhood apparently has only been half successful. About 60 residents of the Sunset Park neighborhood Monday evening met with police to discuss an April 25 incident in which police say gang members shot at two officers - and how police handled the incident.
