Self-proclaimed gang member arrested on murder charges (San Antonio, TX): A teenager who police said admitted he was a proud gang member was charged Wednesday night with the murder of a 19-year-old man. John Arroyo, 17, was apprehended by the San Antonio Police Gang Unit.

War refugee slain in Chicago (Chicago, IL): Rene Barahona considered the United States a refuge where he could escape the decade-long civil war that had devastated his home in the tiny Central American nation of El Salvador. After he spent years of fending off guerrillas and government troops who wanted to enlist him to fight, the war hit the streets near his family's home in San Salvador 15 years ago, and he felt he had no choice but to leave.

Gunman on bicycle kills Miami teen on Long Island (Long Island, NY): A 15-year-old Miami girl visiting friends and family on Long Island was killed by a gunman riding a mountain bike through a Freeport neighborhood, police said Tuesday. A 16-year-old boy who lived at the house where the shooting took place was wounded.

Officer arrests 2 carrying gun in park (Salt Lake City, UT): Salt Lake City's efforts to crack down on people carrying guns in public parks paid off over the weekend. An observant Salt Lake police officer arrested two admitted gang members Sunday near the Peace Gardens in Jordan Park, 1000 South and 900 West, after he caught them carrying a gun.

Four stabbed in Revere, three with meat cleaver (Revere, MA): Four men were stabbed in Revere Beach over the weekend in two episodes police believe were gang-related, authorities said. One man was seriously wounded and two were injured after their attackers assaulted them with a meat cleaver, authorities said.

15 of Omaha's 35 homicides tied to gang activity in 2003 (Omaha, NE): Gang-related homicides accounted for nearly half of Omaha's 35 homicides last year, according to year-end crime statistics released by the Police Department. Police said there were 15 gang homicides in 2003, nine more than the previous year.

Fresno police crack down on gangs (Fresno, CA): Fresno police spent about 20 hours this weekend searching for gang members and parolees in southwestern neighborhoods, hoping the crackdown will put a dent in gang violence in the area. Police Chief Jerry Dyer said rival gangs Strother Boys and the Garrett Street Boys have been involved in about 30 shootings since November.

Police nab 58 in gang unit raid (Miami, FL): A Miami-Dade anti-gang task force and the Miami Gardens Carol City police district arrested 58 people June 11 in an operation meant to elevate police presence in the area and curb criminal activity.
